CB Shemar Jean-Charles

The Packers need one of their backup cornerbacks to step up at training camp. Outside of an excellent top three, Green Bay’s depth has been a concern.

The good news is that second-year Shemar Jean-Charles has made a fast start to the summer.

According to Mike Spofford of Packers.com, Jean-Charles made an impressive play in a two-minute drill during Saturday’s practice.

Covering Randall Cobb, Jean-Charles thought he had intercepted Aaron Rodgers, only for the officials to determine that he didn’t have control of the ball.

But whether it was called an interception or not isn’t that important. The fact is that Jean-Charles got to the ball and made a play.

As Spofford noted in the article, Jean-Charles has been the Packers’ fourth cornerback so far at training camp. Free-agent addition Keisean Nixon has missed time due to injury.

Jean-Charles will mostly be used in the slot by the Packers, and should provide cover for the starting trio.

Green Bay’s backup corners need to show they are ready to step in when needed. So far, Jean-Charles has done that. Entering year two, that’s an encouraging sign for the Packers.

The aim for Jean-Charles now is to win the CB4 spot ahead of Nixon, once he returns from injury.
