Replacing Davante Adams

Under Matt LaFleur, the Packers are undefeated in games without Davante Adams. But they must now show they can achieve success offensively without their All-Pro wide receiver over the course of a season.

The Packers have invested heavily at the wide receiver position, drafting Christian Watson in the second round, Romeo Doubs in the fourth, Samori Toure in the seventh, and signing Sammy Watkins.

But there’s still plenty of uncertainty at wide receiver.

Since 2020, Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling contributed 4,047 receiving yards and 38 touchdowns. That’s a lot of production to be replaced.

Between Jordy Nelson and Adams, Aaron Rodgers has enjoyed throwing to a star WR1 over the past decade or so. That won’t be the case in 2022, as Matt LaFleur said himself.

That doesn’t mean this can’t be a highly successful offense. A receiver-by-committee approach may work just fine. Perhaps spreading the ball might help unlock the offense even further. Who knows?

But it’s hard to argue the offense can improve without the NFL’s best wide receiver. The Packers now face the task of maintaining dominant play on offense in that exact scenario.

It’s a huge ask.

It will be interesting to see how the offense looks in Week 1 at Minnesota.
