4. Aaron Jones

Unlike the other three players on the list, Aaron Jones is under contract in 2023. He has also made a fast start to the season and is on pace for almost 1,400 rushing yards, which would be a career-best.

Given how important Jones is to the Packers’ offense, it might not sound like a good idea to move on next offseason.

But there are a couple of factors to consider.

The first is the salary cap.

When Jones signed a contract extension in 2021, it was structured in a way to give lower cap hits the first two years, but rise sharply in 2023. It sure looked like the Packers were giving themselves an easy out after two years.

According to Over The Cap, Jones has a cap hit of $5.9 million this season, up slightly from last year. However, that number jumps up to $20.01 million in 2023 and $16.01 million in 2024.

If the Packers move on next offseason, they will create just under $10.5 million in cap space.

The other factor is age. Jones will turn 29 during the 2023 season.

Will the Packers be willing to take on Jones’ huge cap hit next year, or work out a contract restructure? Maybe. But with AJ Dillon capable of being the featured back, there’s every chance the Packers move on from Jones in 2023.
