Why is Amari Rodgers still returning punts?

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”

That perfectly describes the Packers’ decision to keep Amari Rodgers on punt returns. For almost a season-and-a-half, Rodgers has shown he isn’t the answer on punt returns. He rarely makes an explosive play, and far too often makes costly mistakes like fumbles.

He fumbled two weeks ago against the New York Giants. He fumbled in Week 2 against the Chicago Bears.

Rodgers failing to hold on to punts is nothing new. Anytime the Packers have him out there, it’s a risk.

Early in the game, the Packers had all the momentum after taking a 7-0 lead then forcing a three-and-out. But on the Commanders’ punt, Rodgers fumbled, handing Washington the ball in great field position. The Packers’ defense held them to only a field goal, but it was still a costly mistake.

Rodgers’ decision-making is also an issue. An example was late in the second quarter. Rodgers let a punt go around the 10-yard line, but instead of going for a touchback, it would be downed at the Packers’ one-yard line.

Rodgers continues to make mistakes on punt returns, but the Packers are yet to replace him in the role. It makes no sense at this point.
