Jaire Alexander dominates in coverage

After a disappointing performance against the Washington Commanders last week, Jaire Alexander returned to his All-Pro best against the Bills.

Somewhat surprisingly, defensive coordinator Joe Barry didn’t have Alexander follow Stefon Diggs through the game. Instead, Alexander regularly matched up with Gabe Davis.

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Alexander covered Davis on 14 of his 23 routes. The result? Zero receptions on four targets.

Alexander gave up nothing in coverage, making a game-high four pass defenses and an interception.

While there were mistakes elsewhere in the secondary, Alexander continues to show why he’s one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL.

What didn’t make sense was Joe Barry’s decision to have Rasul Douglas cover Diggs in the slot.

Douglas is far better on the outside than in the slot, while Alexander is excellent at playing on the inside. Alexander is also the Packers’ star corner and should’ve been matched up more often on Diggs.

Still, Alexander played his part in taking away one of Josh Allen’s top options in the passing game. Allen had to look elsewhere throughout the game and didn’t often throw in Alexander’s direction.

Alexander stepped up with a dominant performance. He was at his All-Pro best in Week 8.
