Packers need a new punt returner

Have the Packers finally learned their lesson?

It was clear last season that Amari Rodgers needed to be replaced as the punt returner. But Green Bay stuck with him.

Entering Week 10, Rodgers had fumbled four times.

Any time he returns a punt, there’s the risk of a fumble. But he rarely makes a big return, so that risk isn’t worth it.

Well, the Packers stuck with him and paid the price. After forcing a punt deep in Cowboys territory with the game tied at 14-14, Green Bay looked set to get the ball back around midfield. But for the fifth time this season, Rodgers fumbled.

The Cowboys recovered the ball with great field position, and, soon after, took the lead with a touchdown.

Green Bay replaced Rodgers with Keisean Nixon as the punt returner. After making so many mistakes, surely Rodgers’ time as the punt returner is now over.

General manager Brian Gutekunst needs to find the best solution. If Nixon isn’t the long-term choice to return punts, Gutekunst needs to find a capable punt returner to bring in.

If the Packers don’t have an obvious option on the roster, Gutekunst needs to add a free agent who can return punts.
