5 massive questions Packers must answer in the offseason
2. What’s next for Aaron Rodgers?
This is more of a question for Aaron Rodgers than it is for the Packers. The team might not have much say in this.
If Rodgers retires, the Packers’ decision is made up for them. If he wants to keep playing, there isn’t a whole lot the team can do.
ESPN’s Rob Demovsky broke down all the possible scenarios and how they would impact the Packers financially.
Releasing Rodgers is pretty much impossible as Green Bay would have to take on a dead cap hit of over $99 million. That’s not going to happen.
Trading Rodgers to another team would be complicated and hard to pull off given his contract.
However, if Rodgers decides that he wants to walk away in the offseason, it would be possible for the Packers to make it work financially. According to Demovsky, the best scenario may be to keep him on the roster until after June 1, so dead cap hits could be spread out over 2023 and ’24.
Demovsky noted that this scenario would result in a cap hit of under $16 million next season. That would be manageable.
This decision comes down to Rodgers. Does he want to keep playing? And, if so, does he believe returning to Green Bay is his best option?
Either way, it’s a massive question that needs to be answered.
