This New York Jets season truly is the gift that keeps on giving. We've gotten multiple plot twists, and it's only Wednesday morning. And they somehow keep getting more juicy?

This is how the Jets should always exist within the NFL – just a real gossipy mess that keeps us entertained in fun and unique ways on the nights without games.

The latest PR disaster, at least according to a new report from The Athletic writers Dianna Russini and Zack Rosenblatt, is that Jets owner Woody Johnson wanted – and tried – to bench Rodgers after the Week 4 home loss to the Broncos.

And while he was eventually talked out of it, Johnson was adamant that it was Rodgers' play that was "holding the Jets back."

Jets owner Woody Johnson supposedly wanted to bench Aaron Rodgers after Broncos loss

"The coaches had been called in to explain what happened with their units during the 10-9 home loss to the Broncos. During the meeting, Johnson suggested to the coaches that they bench Aaron Rodgers in favor of Tyrod Taylor because he felt Rodgers’ performance was holding the team back ... The idea of benching the future Hall of Famer sounded so absurd that one coach asked whether the owner was serious — multiple sources from that meeting believed he was."

The most beautiful thing about this story is its timing. Maybe it just happened to come together the night before Aaron Rodgers' Wednesday press conference, but I doubt it! This isn't The Athletic's first rodeo. We're going to get some sort of very weird answer about this from Rodgers tomorrow, and that'll last us until at least Friday afternoon.

Also, don't let all the Rodgers anecdotes take away from how miserable it sounds like now-former Jets GM Joe Douglas was. Working for Johnson supposedly left Douglas "defeated" and "devoid of emotion." This is the team, remember, that Rodgers actively worked very hard to be traded to. It then talks about how hard Johnson pushed Douglas to trade for Davante Adams at any cost, which is probably only, like, the sixth-most rage-inducing fact for Jets fans in the story.

It's not a surprise that the Jets continue to be a mess, but there is something surprising how well they continue to raise the bar. Like I said, the gift that keeps on giving.
