Aaron Rodgers has reunited with Mike McCarthy for one final shot at another Super Bowl run, but this will be his last.
While speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Rodgers unofficially announced his retirement tour by confirming he has no plans of playing beyond this season: "This is it," he said.
Rodgers has achieved almost everything. A Super Bowl win. Four MVPs. Countless franchise and NFL records. But there is one blemish on his resume that he will now likely never achieve: Beating the Green Bay Packers.
Aaron Rodgers will likely retire having failed to beat only one NFL team
Rodgers has beaten 31 franchises in the NFL, including his current team. The only club he has never defeated? The Packers.
He had an opportunity last season. Rodgers acknowledged it before Week 8 last year, saying it would be "fun" to beat the Packers "because I would've beaten every team."
Instead, Jordan Love tied Brett Favre's franchise record, completing 20 consecutive passes to lead the Packers past Rodgers' Steelers. And in that moment, Rodgers missed an opportunity to join an elite club.
Favre. Tom Brady. Peyton Manning. Drew Brees. They are the only quarterbacks in NFL history to defeat all 32 franchises.
Rodgers led the Steelers to a 16-7 halftime lead over the Packers, and for a while, it looked like he'd get one over on his former team and his apprentice, while completing the set of 32 wins against 32 teams. Love had other ideas, and now Rodgers will almost certainly never get that opportunity again.
Barring the two teams reaching Super Bowl LXI, which the odds suggest is a massive long shot, we will never see Rodgers vs. the Packers II.
Green Bay could meet Pittsburgh in the 2027 regular season, as the Packers will play a team from the AFC North.
But with Rodgers confirming this is his final dance, it won't matter if the Packers and Steelers play again next season. The opportunity for one more showdown is now all but gone.
Ironically, Green Bay will play in Pittsburgh for its preseason opener in August, but outside of a potential fun joint-practice opportunity, there's little excitement there.
Rodgers brought up the possibility of beating his 32nd team ahead of the Packers-Steelers game last season. It's clearly something he has thought about. Love denied him the opportunity to seal that landmark victory. Now, with Rodgers confirming his plans to walk off into the sunset at the end of 2026, he will forever have victories over 31 teams, but never versus the Packers.
