The clock keeps ticking, yet there is still no concrete update on Matt LaFleur's future with the Green Bay Packers.
Now four days removed from the Packers' playoff exit and, crickets. The only substantive update came from ESPN's Adam Schefter on Monday, when he reported that the Packers were "expected to try to work out a deal" with LaFleur.
Even then, "expected to try?" The wording was interesting, but it still seemed to indicate that LaFleur was staying. Now, however, Schefter has provided another update. It's frustratingly cryptic and loaded with uncertainty, and it just makes the Packers-LaFleur situation even more confusing.
"As my friend Windy would say, there's something going on in Green Bay. We gotta keep watching Green Bay," Schefter told NFL Live.
He is referring to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, who has famously predicted big NBA moves in the past. As Schefter said that, he pointed both hands in the air, a reference to an image of Windhorst that has become a meme. Schefter seemed to imply that there's more to the story in Green Bay.
"Why has it gone on this long with him heading into the last year of his contract?" Schefter continued. "It should not be a difficult deal to work out, and here we are into Tuesday afternoon. They've been talking for a while, and nothing has gotten worked out yet.
"They still might work it out. They still might figure it out. But they haven't yet."
Adam Schefter implies there's more to the Packers-Matt LaFleur story than it initially seems
It's a fair point. If the Packers are fully committed to LaFleur, and LaFleur wants to stay in Green Bay, what's the holdup? Schefter believes it would be an easy negotiation in that scenario.
And if it's as simple as the two sides just hammering out the final terms of a multi-year extension, why the silence? Why does it seem like every Packers reporter has no idea what's going to happen? Why wouldn't Green Bay want that information out there?
It's baffling and bizarre. Based on Schefter's comments, it's clearly not nothing either.
In his own words, there is "something going on in Green Bay." What exactly that is remains to be seen. Could the Packers still fire LaFleur? Are they secretly working on a trade? Is it as simple as a disagreement in negotiations that is leaving everything on the table?

There are many paths the Packers could take, but they need to act fast. If LaFleur doesn't return in 2026, Green Bay can't afford to delay and miss out on the top coaching candidates in this cycle. It's only a matter of time before the hirings begin and the dominoes fall into place.
Even if LaFleur returns, which looked likely earlier in the week, he needs to shake up his coaching staff. LaFleur must have candid conversations about which assistants have made a positive impact and where they need improvement.
Schefter kicked off the week with a report that the Packers were negotiating with LaFleur. Now, he's provided a confusing and cryptic update.
There's "something going on," but nobody seems to know exactly what. Stay tuned. This ain't over.
