Bears' DJ Moore trade soothes Packers' painful memory free of charge

Trading receiver DJ Moore to Buffalo will save the Chicago Bears a chunk of cap space, paving the way for other moves elsewhere on the roster. From the Green Bay Packers' perspective, that could mean monsters under the bed (Maxx Crosby to the Bears, anyone?), but in the immediate aftermath, it grants them some small relief.

No longer will the secondary need to account for Moore on a regular basis. Keisean Nixon can stop reliving that 46-yard walk-off touchdown in Week 16.

Not only did Moore burn Nixon on that play, he also torched Green Bay's secondary in the Wild Card Round, bringing in six catches for 64 yards and the go-ahead touchdown with under two minutes to go.

Chicago still has a decent group of young pass catchers, including Rome Odunze, Luther Burden III, and tight end Colston Loveland. Who knows what the Moore trade portends? Those considerations granted, removing him from the equation gives the Packers one less thing to worry about without even making a move of their own.

Green Bay Packers won't be sorry to see DJ Moore less often moving forward

For the Bears, Moore was no longer worth his $24.5 million cap hit in 2026, but still, he led the team's receivers last season in both catches (50) and yards (682). That's despite the fact that he never emerged as the elite threat they hoped for after his first season in Chicago.

Moore recorded a career year following his trade from Carolina, racking up 98 receptions, 1,364 yards, and eight touchdowns, but his production dropped each of the past two seasons. Whether or not he was properly deployed by new head coach Ben Johnson became a touchy talking point in the Bears community. With Josh Allen at quarterback, perhaps the former first-rounder will return to form for the Bills.

No such decline was apparent in Moore's last two games against Green Bay. His 161 total receiving yards included the dagger of that miraculous Week 16 comeback that may have decided the division. Of course DJ Moore caught the game-winning touchdown three weeks later in the playoffs.

In general, despite going ghost mode in the Packers' Week 14 win, he has turned it up a notch when facing them. Per Pro Football Reference, Moore has averaged 72.6 yards in eight career games against them. Aside from an 80 percent catch rate in two games versus Denver, his 79.6 catch percentage against Green Bay is his best against any team in the league.

Moore's migration to the AFC East doesn't mean the Packers won't see him at all. They have a home game against Buffalo next season, giving him another chance to twist the knife in the Green and Gold. They will only see him in the playoffs, at least, if both teams make the Super Bowl. The Bears using Moore's vacated cap space to land Crosby would be a nightmare scenario, but at least now Nixon can sleep more soundly.
