Brett Favre awkwardly getting confronted by Mark Gastineau is hard to watch
Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre is in the spotlight once again but not for the reasons you might be thinking of. In ESPN's latest 30 for 30 documentary titled "The New York Sack Exchange", Favre is confronted by former New York Jets defensive lineman Mark Gastineau, who is still angry about how his single-season sack record was broken.
Some backstory, Gastineau held the single-season sack record with 22 sacks during the 1984 season. Former New York Giants defensive lineman Michael Strahan broke the record in 2001 but how he got to 22.5 sacks has been a controversial topic ever since it happened. Favre was accused of deliberately hitting the deck so that Strahan could have the record and Gastineau has been one of the most vocal critics of the play.
In the 30 for 30 confrontation, Gastineau and Favre were both attending a memorabilia show in Chicago when the long-time Jets defensive lineman approached the Hall of Fame quarterback. The two shook hands and Favre commented how he'd met Gastineau before, which is when things really went off the rails.
"Yeah, right -- when you fell down for him. I'm going to get my sack back. I'm going to get my sack back, dude," Gastineau said.
"You would probably hurt me," Favre responded.
"Well, I don't care," Gastineau said and then pointed at Favre and told him many times how the quarterback really hurt him. Favre was then escorted away from the scene but it was too late by then, as the awkward encounter had already occurred.
Brett Favre's confrontation with Mark Gastineau is painful to watch
Now, of course, Gastineau's record would have fallen regardless, as T.J. Watt tied Strahan's 22.5 sacks during the 2021 season. So, even if Gastineau doesn't feel like Strahan got his sack legitimately, Watt did.
Favre took to X after the clip went viral and said that "There was no malice on [his] part." while praising the former Jets defensive lineman and stating that he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. Favre did acknowledge that the record falling could have impacted Gastineau's Hall of Fame bid and could have helped earn him more money since his career ended.
No matter what your stance is on the situation, everyone can agree that the confrontation between the two former players is uncomfortable and in all honesty, shouldn't have been recorded.
