With the Green Bay Packers' 2024 campaign coming to an end with an ugly 22-10 loss in the Wild Card Round to the Philadelphia Eagles, the grind that is the NFL offseason has now officially begun.
Unlike several other franchises, a list that includes the rival Chicago Bears, the Packers don't have to begin this arduous process by finding a new head coach. They also don't have to worry about completely revamping the roster.
Sure, this franchise has a few holes to fill, but with plenty of dead money from the Aaron Rodgers era finally coming off the books, Green Bay is in great position as far as the salary cap is concerned, which will obviously help when free agency begins in March.
And speaking of free agency, the Packers have 19 players set to hit the open market. Thankfully, however, many on that list are easily expendable and can be replaced in the 2025 NFL Draft, which Green Bay will host for the first time ever this April.
In addition to all that, of course, the Green Bay front office has some decisions to make regarding contract extensions. By our count, they'll have 11 decisions to make in that regard.
The Packers have 11 players eligible for contract extensions during the 2025 NFL offseason
Per the current NFL collective bargaining agreement, players selected in the draft are only eligible to sign a contract extension after three seasons. Those who went undrafted but signed an original three-year deal are eligible after only two years.
It is worth noting that if a player is waived and clears waivers, their original contract is obviously over, and the extension rules no longer apply.
As it pertains to the 11 Packers who are eligible for extensions, eight of them were taken by Green Bay in the 2022 draft and are still playing under their original deals:
- Quay Walker, LB
- Devonte Wyatt, DT
- Christian Watson, WR
- Sean Rhyan, OG
- Romeo Doubs, WR
- Zach Tom, OT
- Kingsley Enagbare, DE
- Rasheed Walker, OT
As Quay Walker and Devonte Wyatt were first-round selections, the Packers can choose to pick up the fifth-year options on their rookie deals.
The three others drafted by the Packers in 2022 — safety Tariq Carpenter, defensive tackle Jonathan Ford, and wide receiver Samori Toure — are no longer with the team.
As far as undrafted players go, wide receiver Malik Heath and defensive end Brenton Cox Jr. are also eligible, as both signed with Green Bay in 2023 and are still playing on their original deals. Offensive lineman Kadeem Telfort also signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2023 but was waived from his original contract and has since signed a new one.
Lastly, backup quarterback Malik Willis, who was acquired via trade from the Tennessee Titans, is also eligible, as he's still playing under the rookie deal he signed after being drafted in 2022. Wideout Bo Melton, who was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in 2022, is not eligible because he's no longer playing on his original contract.
Now, just because the Packers can extend these 11 players, that doesn't mean they will. Of the 11, the three most likely options at this point are Romeo Doubs, Rasheed Walker, and Zach Tom.
Christian Watson would have been on the list, but without knowing how he'll recover from his torn ACL, Green Bay will likely wait that one out.
