Packers fans have 12,416 reasons to trust Matt LaFleur’s latest hire

You get what you Getsy, and you don't get upset...sy.

There’s just something about nostalgia and the NFL that makes perfect sense in the most nonsensical way. The Green Bay Packers know that better than most.

Case in point, midway through the 2024 season, head coach Matt LaFleur made the calculated call to bring Luke Getsy back to Wisconsin in a part-time role for his third stint with the team. Then in January, LaFleur brought him back full-time, even if the exact title wasn’t immediately clear. It didn’t take long for fans to connect the dots on what the 42-year-old was really coming back to do.

According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the Packers are officially naming Getsy their quarterbacks coach, a job he already held for three seasons during the Aaron Rodgers era from 2019 through 2021:

Over their three-year span together, Rodgers threw for 12,416 yards, 111 touchdowns, and just 13 interceptions. He picked up back-to-back MVP awards in 2020 and 2021. He might not be the sexiest name for fans, but the Cheeseheads have seen this movie before, and it ended in back-to-back MVPs. It's all about trusting the process.

Matt LaFleur betting on Luke Getsy to unlock Jordan Love

Getsy originally joined the Packers back in 2014 under the Mike McCarthy era as an offensive quality control coach before earning a promotion to wide receivers coach in 2016. After a brief one-year stop at Mississippi State, he returned to Green Bay in 2019 when LaFleur took over, stepping in as quarterbacks coach for Rodgers.

It’s been more down than up for Getsy since leaving Wisco. Back-to-back failed stints with the Chicago Bears and Las Vegas Raiders cooled off the “offensive guru” label in a flash. A homecoming with a potentially elite quarterback might be exactly what he needs to reset the narrative.

Green Bay has been in the market for a quarterbacks coach after Sean Mannion left for Philadelphia to run Jalen Hurts’ offense (good luck). Mannion climbed fast in LaFleur’s staff and did a really nice job with Jordan Love’s growth, especially with his footwork and overall mechanics. It's Getsy's turn now to see if he still has a bit of that Lambeau magic left in him.

Green Bay didn’t bring Getsy back to relive 12,416 yards. They brought him back to see if he could blow that number out of the water with Love. If that happens, nobody in Wisconsin is going to care how his stops in Chicago or Vegas went. Time will tell if the third time is the charm.
