The Green Bay Packers are bracing to lose a number of key players in NFL Free Agency, which is now just a few weeks away.

One of the key players set to potentially leave in free agency is the team's leader in targets, receptions, receiving yards, and the man tied for the team lead in receiving touchdowns. Romeo Doubs has long been an underrated receiver for the Packers, but we're likely about to find out how the rest of the NFL perceives him.

Doubs is set to get paid on the open market with the franchise tag -- a $30 million investment -- ridiculous and out of the question. But the price range for Doubs is going to be beyond what the Packers are willing to pay to keep him around, which has led insider Matt Schneidman of The Athletic to declare that Doubs is "as good as gone."

Packers insider declares WR Romeo Doubs is as good as gone from Green Bay

The reason this got brought up in Schneidman's latest column was actually a question about Matthew Golden, whose role is expected to increase in the 2026 season.

The Packers have been preparing for Doubs's departure for some time, and they will likely reap the benefits of whatever contract he signs at some point in 2027 when compensatory picks are handed out. In fact, the departure of Doubs could help contribute to the Packers getting at least two or three picks within the 3rd and 4th round of next year's draft.

They could get high compensatory picks for Doubs, Rasheed Walker, and even Malik Willis if he signs a starter-level contract this offseason.

Obviously, the Packers have developed Doubs from the ground up, so it will be tough to see him go. The NFL presents us with frequent brutal realities, and this is just the latest. The departure of Doubs, if it ends up happening (as expected), would mean the Packers have a new top dog at receiver, officially.

Although Doubs hasn't provided the type of impact you expect from a WR1, he's done a pretty great job of being a reliable threat for the team over the last four years, including leading the team in targets two of the first three years of the Jordan Love era.

His contributions have been well above his 4th-round NFL Draft status, and he should be commended for that.

But as previously mentioned, the Packers are ready to move on without much resistance. Not only is the 2025 1st-round pick Golden waiting in the wings, but the Packers still have Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Savion Williams, and Christian Watson under contract. They will also feature Tucker Kraft heavily in the passing game when he's back to full strength.
