Bo Melton has done nothing but prove to be a team-first player for the Green Bay Packers, and he's taking another one for the team ahead of their Week 1 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings.
The Packers surprisingly cut Melton right after their practice on Friday, a move that initially sent some shockwaves throughout the fan base. But the initial shock quickly shifted to relief when it was revealed that Melton was simply helping the Packers with some Week 1 roster math.
According to The Athletic's Matt Schneidman, Melton is going to be signed to the Packers' practice squad and elevated to the gameday roster. But is it really going to be that simple?
There has been some initial questioning over whether or not Melton had vested veteran status. Would the Packers really have risked such a well-liked player by the coaching staff getting poached on the waiver wire this close to a game? That might actually be the case, but they don't seem too worried about it.

Melton wasn't on an NFL roster for most of the 2022 season (his rookie year) before signing with the Packers, so he only appears to have three "accrued" seasons. The initial report from ESPN's Adam Schefter (and everyone else) is that Melton was released, not waived. That is an important distinction.
And if we're to take their confidence at face value, what could be the reason for opening up a 53-man roster spot this close to a game?
Is there a free-agent signing or trade in the works? Are the Packers having to sign someone to the active roster off their practice squad to prevent another team from poaching? There are only so many explanations for opening up a 53-man roster spot this close to a game, and we won't be left in suspense for too long.
This could be a financial move by the Packers. If a vested veteran is on a roster for Week 1 of the regular season, then their base salaries become fully guaranteed. Melton has a cap hit of just $1.16 million this season with a base salary of $1.15 million, so this could be as simple as the Packers not wanting to fully guarantee that salary for a player at the bottom of their roster.
Still, the timing -- and the move itself -- seem very strange.
