It only took 1 game for Davante Adams to call out the NY Jets locker room
Davante Adams left the Green Bay Packers due to frustrations over a new deal and uncertainty over life after Aaron Rodgers. Would the Packers remain competitive with Jordan Love under center? Adams wasn't willing to find out.
Here's a quote from Adams after he left the Packers in 2022, and it's fascinating to revisit in hindsight:
"Where I am in my career, and this isn't a shot at anybody, any other quarterbacks in Green Bay, I love Jordan Love especially, he's a great guy — but I got aspirations of doing really, really big things and being remembered," Adams said. "And I just wasn't really at a point in my career that I was willing to sacrifice Aaron not being there after a year or two."
Fast forward only two years, and the Packers and Adams have gone in completely different directions. Love led Green Bay into the playoffs a season ago, and the team is 5-2 and in good shape entering Week 8 this year.
Adams, meanwhile, forced his way out of Las Vegas to reunite with Rodgers in New York. But after losing his debut and the Jets falling to 2-5 on the season, Adams has already called out his new teammates.
Davante Adams' comments shed light on why Jets' season is going so badly
Some mistakes are fixable. A team can clean up penalties or dropped passes, and coordinators can adapt their schemes to cover up areas of weakness. What Adams described goes far deeper than that, and it only took one game for the All-Pro wide receiver to blast his new Jets teammates.
"There was a lack of energy and urgency out there, and it was apparent. I played on teams that have that winning culture," Adams told reporters.
"This team being so talented, roster wise, it's just a waste to have everybody out there and to have a dead sideline like that. Breece (Hall) catch a ball and go 60, and we can't feed off the energy. Those types of plays are supposed to be contagious for the rest of the team."
He sure did play on a team that had a winning culture, but he chose to walk away. Since then, the Raiders and Jets have gone 15-23 in games Adams has played in.
A lack of energy? That speaks more to the Jets' culture, coaching, and leadership.
They've already fired their head coach, who has since gone in the opposite direction to Adams and Rodgers by joining the Packers, but the Jets have taken a step back without him.
Green Bay is winning games with Love. It won both games with Malik Willis. Brian Gutekunst has built a talented roster that battles until the end (see, 31-29 loss to Minnesota in Week 4), has bought into the culture and Matt LaFleur's philosophy, and is on track for another playoff berth.
It only took Adams five days to call out the Jets locker room. Five days.
Adams knows what it takes to win. He helped the Packers enjoy years of success under LaFleur and Mike McCarthy. The Jets hoped he would be the missing piece to get their season back on track, but Adams has already identified a problem that could ruin any hopes of turning their 2-5 record into a Super Bowl run.
