The Green Bay Packers finally found their Malik Willis replacement earlier this week by signing veteran Tyrod Taylor.
Taylor offers a ton of NFL experience, having started 62 games since entering the league as a sixth-round draft choice 15 years ago. He has gone 29-31-1 in those games, showing he is a more-than-capable quarterback, and the Packers should have high hopes of what he could do in a Matt LaFleur offense.
His impact goes well beyond that, though. As former Packers Pro Bowler John Kuhn said on The Tundra podcast, it's not just about when the team needs him to cover for Jordan Love, but also how he can help Love in every game.
"He's that guy that lifts (Love) up," Kuhn said. "He's that guy that bounces ideas off of him. He's the guy that, on the sideline, Jordan misses a throw and says, 'What did you see on that?' He looks at this with 16 years of experience and says, 'Check out the safety rotation and the corner starting to backpedal right at the snap of the ball. This is when you want to focus your attention to the other side and bullet the ball here."
"I think this is great. It's going to bring a lot of experience to the room. It's going to bring a lot of character into that room."
Tyrod Taylor is the perfect backup quarterback to help Jordan Love
Taylor is as experienced as they come. The 36-year-old has spent time with seven teams, both as a starter and a backup. He has worked with different coaches, different teammates, and learned from the best. There aren't many scenarios Taylor hasn't experienced either on the field or as the backup on the sideline.
While he may not offer the game-changing upside Willis did as a capable starter, which is why Willis landed a big deal from the Miami Dolphins in free agency, he can impact the Packers' offense in different ways.
As Kuhn noted, there's a reason why Taylor is entering his 16th season in the league. He has earned a ton of respect.
And that makes him the perfect sidekick for Love.
Love has become one of the best quarterbacks in the NFC, and he is progressing each year as he gains more experience. He significantly reduced his turnovers last season (11 in 2023, 11 in 2024, but just six in 2025), without losing the big-time plays.
Now, Love has a backup in his ear who can help him rein it in when he is gambling too much, take the easy wins, or be more aggressive when the situation calls for it. He will be able to help Love see what the defense is doing and make in-game adjustments alongside LaFleur.
If the Packers need Taylor to play, he is a capable backup. His impact will go far beyond that, though, with the work he can do to help elevate Love's game to the next level.
