Since the end of 2025, the Green Bay Packers haven't been afraid to hand out extensions to team mainstays such as wide receivers Christian Watson and Jayden Reed. More recently, defensive end Devonte Wyatt signed a three-year deal worth $57 million to stick around in Titletown beyond 2026. This has led to speculation about cornerback Keisean Nixon also getting a new contract.
Nixon is entering the last year of a $18 million deal he signed in 2024. There was speculation that he could sit out training camp if he didn't get a new deal, but he ultimately showed up. Of course, nobody would blame the veteran cornerback if he wanted long-term security.
The issue is that Nixon hasn't performed well enough, and that included the preseason opener last week.
Keisean Nixon struggled in the Packers' preseason opener (and training camp)
Keisean Nixon appeared in 19 defensive snaps against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He posted an underwhelming Pro Football Focus overall grade of 43.8. Although he was credited with just one pass completion surrendered, he missed an open-field tackle that resulted in a 24-yard gain.

You could argue that even the best players make mistakes. However, it's not a one-time occurrence for Nixon. To nobody's surprise, rookie Brandon Cisse has seemingly moved ahead of him on the depth chart.
While Nixon has continued to practice with the starters, he's also gotten some reps with the second team. That's not the workload a player who will tentatively start will get.
Keep in mind that Green Bay also signed Benjamin St-Juste to a two-year, $10 million contract in free agency, and he has fared well opposite Cisse.
What's next for Keisean Nixon and the Packers?
Nixon most definitely has a chance to bounce back. But at this point, his best bet is to put his head down, rebuild his stock, and enter the open market next year. He could request a trade if he truly wants to get a deal in 2026, but it's hard to see a team acquiring him unless it's dealing with injuries at cornerback.
To Nixon's credit, he hasn't made a fuss about his contract status. When asked about it earlier this year, he referred all his questions to his agent. The fact that he attended training camp also helped. On the other hand, K9 has failed to make a strong impression, arguably the most important part when looking for a new deal.
From the Packers' side of things, it doesn't make sense to just cut ties with Nixon. He is still projected to start this season, even if St-Juste is still in the mix. If he can make the most out of whatever opportunities he can get, maybe he can get a new deal.
Just don't expect him to get it in 2026 or with the Packers.
