Keisean Nixon may be laying the groundwork for his own Packers failure

There are some recent rumblings that don't bode well for Green Bay's default CB1...

The Green Bay Packers are already in the midst of their mandatory minicamp, and a big question mark has only gotten bigger. Cornerback Keisean Nixon is expected to be the top dog at the position in 2026, but his situation is complicated by the fact that he's on an expiring contract.

After seeing the type of money Packers wideout Christian Watson netted despite limited/questionable production, there's increasing speculation that Nixon could angle for his next payday.

Indeed, Nixon is apparently mulling a training camp holdout. Does he think he has leverage due to Green Bay's lack of other viable cornerback options? It's unclear, but the Packers' top draft pick could be a huge beneficiary of this potential fledgling controversy.

Rumor has it Keisean Nixon may not play for Packers in 2026 without new contract

Jason Wilde went on his ESPN Wisconsin radio show to discuss the dubious future ahead for Nixon as he enters a contract year, which was deftly clipped below by Cheesehead TV.

Long story short, Nixon may not report to training camp, or play the season until he signs a new deal. The caption also states that Nixon, on public record, asserted that he'd seek a raise before this season gets underway.

Quite a bold move by a man who yielded a 105.2 passer rating and committed 12 penalties during the 2025 campaign. Nixon may be a bargain on his current three-year, $18 million contract, but he didn't play anywhere near well enough last year to justify an extension.

There's no question that Nixon was at his best as a return man. For whatever reason, the Packers went all-in on his ability to contribute in the secondary, and it honestly hasn't paid off. Meanwhile, they're set to deploy Skyy Moore as their primary return specialist.

Nixon is a two-time All-Pro as a returner. The Packers need to break in rookie second-round pick Brandon Cisse at cornerback as is. Why not just let Nixon hold out, give all his reps to Cisse, and get the South Carolina product up to speed quicker?

If Nixon isn't thinking like this, he ought to be. Unless he has some drastic turnaround in his performance, Cisse is poised to replace Nixon after the 2026 campaign anyway.

Oh by the way, Benjamin St-Juste is also in the fold after a strong stretch for the Chargers last season. Between Cisse, St-Juste, and shoot, even past Chiefs draft pick Kamal Hadden, there are multiple contenders for snaps at cornerback eager to capitalize on Nixon's prospective absence from training camp and/or beyond.

As fixated-to-a-fault as the Packers tend to be on retaining their in-house talent, even they can't be baited into overpaying for Nixon. The mere decisions to acquire St-Juste and Cisse alone already speak to that.

This is a slippery slope Keisean Nixon is navigating if this is, in fact, how he wants to play things. He could be setting up his own exit from Titletown — and a downward career trajectory that'd take a massive effort to rally back from.
