The NFL offseason is always a time for optimism to run wild, but it's also a harsh reminder that the end of the line could soon be drawing near for players who have been given seemingly countless opportunities to prove themselves.
A team like the Green Bay Packers will be constantly facing these types of dilemmas because the Packers' roster is comprised of a majority of homegrown talents and draft picks. As a result, goodbyes can be extremely difficult, and patience -- even for recent high draft picks -- can quickly run out.
The Packers' 2023 NFL Draft class included two talented tight end prospects who were supposed to form an elite duo at the position, at least if all things worked out the way general manager Brian Gutekunst and head coach Matt LaFleur envisioned. The Packers used a second-round pick on Oregon State tight end Luke Musgrave and a third-round pick on South Dakota State's Tucker Kraft.
The latter has become a star player at the position -- maybe the best in the NFL, when healthy -- while the former might have to change the Packers' minds if their patience with him has already run out.
Luke Musgrave facing make-or-break offseason for Packers in 2026
There were rumors that the Packers were potentially interested in trading Luke Musgrave in the middle of the 2025 season. There was even a report that they would have actually traded Musgrave specifically to a team like the Jacksonville Jaguars or Denver Broncos at the deadline, but the Tucker Kraft injury shut those ideas down.
The fact that the Packers didn't really do anything at all to upgrade the tight end position in the 2026 NFL Draft might be the biggest vote of actual confidence Musgrave has received since his first couple of years with the team.
He played all 17 games last season, catching 24 passes and proving -- for the first time at the NFL level -- that he could stay available for an entire season. That was a huge step forward in itself.
The traits have always been there for Musgrave and have never been in question. He was a second-round draft pick for a reason. But his draft status can also work against him in some ways, as it puts the pressure on to live up to those lofty expectations. When a team takes you that high, they expect a significant return on the investment.
Other than a handful of back-end roster guys that most NFL fans wouldn't recognize and 2026 undrafted free agent RJ Maryland, the Packers' only options at tight end right now are Musgrave and Kraft, whose recovery timeline should have him ready for the 2026 regular season.
With Musgrave getting a golden opportunity, patience will be wearing thin if it hasn't already run out. If he can't prove to be ready to step up this season in a bigger capacity, then the Packers might have to actually make a move to add to the position before the season starts.
