It's starting to feel like 2018. Mike McCarthy as head coach, Aaron Rodgers at quarterback.
The two reunited this offseason in Pittsburgh in what Rodgers says will be his final season in the NFL. McCarthy is now turning back the clock again and bringing another former Green Bay Packer with him.
The Steelers have announced that they are re-signing defensive tackle Dean Lowry to a one-year contract.
Steelers bring back Dean Lowry to create another Mike McCarthy connection
The Packers selected Lowry in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. That was the famous "run the table" season when Green Bay started 4-6 but went on a magical eight-game winning streak all the way to the NFC Championship Game.
Lowry enjoyed seven seasons with the Packers, including four under Matt LaFleur, before spending a year with the Minnesota Vikings (of course, the Vikings sign every Packers free agent). The veteran defensive tackle then headed to Pittsburgh, where he played 12 games in 2024 but missed all of last season due to a torn ACL.
A return to Pittsburgh had seemed likely for weeks, and now the team has made it official. McCarthy already has familiarity with Lowry, having spent three seasons together in Green Bay, so it makes sense.
The Miami Dolphins may be known as Green Bay South after stealing Jon-Eric Sullivan, Jeff Hafley, and Malik Willis this offseason, but the Steelers have similarly become a very likable team from a Packers perspective.
Beyond the obvious McCarthy-Rodgers reunion, the most recent head coach-quarterback pairing to win a championship in Green Bay, just look at McCarthy's coaching staff.
Joe Whitt Jr. The legendary James Campen (the Packers should've brought him back). Jahri Evans. Frank Cignetti Jr. Patrick Graham. Jason Simmons. The list goes on. There are so many Packers connections.
Now, Lowry is back in the mix. It's his third season with the Steelers, and bringing him back felt like a no-brainer from the moment McCarthy arrived.
Watching the Steelers this season will feel like jumping in a time machine back to 2018. McCarthy hopes not. He'd much prefer Rodgers' last dance to more closely resemble the 2010 season.
It's truly fascinating to watch from afar with a Packers interest – we'll have a front-row seat when the two teams meet in the preseason opener. It's also really cool to see Lowry get another opportunity after overcoming a significant injury.
