The Green Bay Packers kick off training camp next week, and while they are nicely positioned for another solid season here in 2026, there is still some meat that's been left on the bone over the years.
The Packers have gone one-and-done in the playoffs in each of the last two seasons and just have not had the gusto to ascend from that 'good' to 'great' tier. With how common these seasons are beginning to be, it's worth wondering if this season could be where the urgency ticks up a notch and where certain players and coaches begin to feel the heat in the kitchen.
On paper, Green Bay does have a well-rounded squad, but the defensive front, specifically with the pass-rushers, is a spot where more talent could be added, and the Packers should pursue a key signing that could come at just the right time before camp begins.
Enter Von Miller.
Packers should sign Von Miller at just the right time
Last year, the Packers had 36 sacks, which was tied for the sixth-fewest in the NFL, but it gets even more concerning. Obviously, Micah Parsons led the way with 12.5 sacks, doing so in just 14 games. We also know that, assuming Parsons begins the year on the PUP list, he'll miss at least four regular-season games, but it feels very likely he misses more than that.
Outside of Parsons, the other pass-rusher of note last year was Rashan Gary. He finished with 7.5 sacks and 20 quarterback hits, but he got shipped to Dallas earlier this offseason. There was no other Packers player in 2025 who had more than four sacks or nine quarterback hits.
Unfortunately, the Packers' pass-rush is not only the weakest link remaining on the defense, but it's incredibly top-heavy, especially with Gary gone.
This also makes a potential Von Miller signing logical and needed. Miller, despite being in his age-36 season, finished the 2025 season with nine sacks, six tackles for loss, and 15 quarterback hits for the Washington Commanders, doing so in just 37 percent of the defensive snaps.
He played in all 17 games, and at this stage of the offseason, a potential Miller signing would be the best the team could do to boost the pass rush. At this stage of his career, Miller is going to come in on pass-rush downs, likely only third downs and perhaps second downs if it's a long enough distance.
But most of the best defenses in the league are able to take advantage of those situations where defenses are able to 'tee off' on opposing offenses. While this was now four years ago, current Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon was in the same role with the Philadelphia Eagles.
In that 2022 season when the Eagles made it to the Super Bowl, they finished with 69 sacks in the regular season, and four players had at least 11 sacks. The Packers may not have the personnel for that, but Gannon has presided over sack-heavy defenses.
And while sacks aren't the lone stat that defines how good a defense can be, getting to the quarterback in general is still hugely important. With what could be on the line for the Packers in 2026, I am not sure it's wise to not make another move here.
Potentially signing Miller wouldn't be the biggest move of the offseason, but it would at least be a floor-raising addition and an overall boost to the unit.
