The Green Bay Packers rewarded dynamic wide receiver Christian Watson with a rather steep four-year contract extension worth $110.5 million. That's an average annual value of about $27.6 million.
Watson's new deal comes on the heels of Green Bay re-upping with Jayden Reed to the tune of three years and $50.25 million. For two wideouts who haven't sniffed 1,000 yards in a single season in a combined seven years of NFL service, sure seems like a risky investment.
But that's neither here nor there. At least the Pack are proactive in their approach to put Jordan Love in a position to realize his full potential as a quarterback. Whether Watson or Reed live up to their deals will depend on health, opportunities, and honestly, how much Love can elevate them. There's something to be said about maintaining continuity, though.
Anyway, the next logical step, based on Green Bay's traditionally insular team-building approach, would be an extension for Tucker Kraft. I have a different take on what the *best* move would be. Key distinction there.
Christian Watson mega contract should trigger Matt LaFleur to hit up his brother in Arizona
And by that I mean, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur should be borderline bullying his little bro, Mike, the Cardinals' newest head coach, to get Arizona GM Monti Ossenfort on the phone with Brian Gutekunst.
Let's face it, the Cards are nowhere close to winning in the NFC West division. They just drafted Jeremiyah Love No. 3 overall despite a roster so full of holes it's a mass-human sieve.
Love (Jeremiyah and Jordan) is the crux of all this, however. Because the dynamic rookie out of Notre Dame will be Arizona's lead back, with free-agent addition Tyler Allgeier to complement him, the Cards have a massive surplus in the backfield.
Although aging vet James Conner may be a better short-term option with slightly less risk, it occurred to me that Green Bay ought to be attacking Ossenfort's phone lines in an effort to acquire Trey Benson in a trade.
Benson was the 66th overall pick in the 2024 draft. He's listed at 220 pounds and had sub-4.4 40 speed coming out of Florida State. Although he had an ankle injury as a rookie and tore his meniscus last year, Benson was shut down toward the end of both seasons, seemingly more out of an abundance of caution than anything else.
Those injuries aren't major deal-breakers. It's unlikely Benson will have much of a significant role at all in a losing situation for the Cards in 2026. In his own self-interest, the 23-year-old should be trying to get out of dodge (er, the desert).
Green Bay seems like a perfect landing spot. The Pack carry a deserved reputation for player development, and regardless of how Josh Jacobs' legal situation plays out, they could really use either a RB1 contingency plan, or a solid No. 2 behind Jacobs who'd be an upgrade over unproven commodities in MarShawn Lloyd and Chris Brooks.
It bodes well for Benson that, despite subpar quarterback play and a "meh" Arizona offensive line, he's averaged 4.9 yards per carry to date on 92 attempts. Imagine what he could do with an explosive Packers passing attack to complement him and clear out the box a bit!
So yeah, Matt, hit up Mike. Get Monti on the horn with Gutey. Make it happen!
