The raw numbers may not jump off the page, but Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson showed all-around improvement in 2025. His growth was ostensibly a factor in the club's decision to trade Dontayvion Wicks to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Green Bay is rolling the dice on its talented young group of pass-catchers, and Watson appears to be a key piece moving forward. However, he's set to be an unrestricted free agent come 2027, raising valid questions about his future with the Packers. Actions speak louder than words, though, and Wicks' departure is the latest vote of confidence.
First, the Packers let Romeo Doubs walk to the New England Patriots in free agency, then Wicks gets sent to the Eagles. It's becoming increasingly clear that Green Bay is ready to make a significant commitment to Watson (and presumably standout tight end Tucker Kraft).

Of course, fellow Packers wideout Jayden Reed, who's also entering a contract year, remains part of the discussion. Yet, "there's a chance both [he and Watson] have already earned extensions" from Green Bay, per Matt Schneidman of The Athletic.
One way or another, the Packers needed to consolidate their crowded offense; there are several mouths to feed and only one football. Not to mention, they can't afford to mess around with their salary cap after working diligently to shed considerable payroll this offseason. Nevertheless, Schneidman believes "Watson figures to take priority over Reed" in any potential negotiations, and understandably so.
Watson hit the gear many Packers fans envisioned when the team selected him No. 34 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft this past season. His 2.28 yards per route run (YPRR) ranked 10th out of 133 receivers with at least 25 targets. For context, that's a higher clip than some of the top names at the position, namely Ja'Marr Chase and Nico Collins.
Moreover, Watson was one of 19 receivers to reach the 2-YPPR mark and 12th in passer rating when targeted (120.8) using the aforementioned statistical filter. The rising fifth-year pro was already among the league's premier field-stretchers, highlighted by his career 17.0 yards per reception. Suddenly, he has elite, efficient playmaking ability to boot and a prime opportunity to showcase his talents and secure a massive payday.
Wicks and Doubs' exits create 131 vacated targets in Green Bay's passing attack. Watson will be relied on to fill their voids — in the short and long term.
