Packers could trade for a former top prospect to lock up position of concern

This offseason, the Green Bay Packers have had reason to worry about one key position. While all the attention has been on the wide receiver room, the Packers' running back room has also been in the spotlight.

Of course, the running back room has had different reasons for being in the headlines with Josh Jacobs' off-field concerns. But third-year pro MarShawn Lloyd has also become a concern since entering the league, having many injury issues and hardly seeing the field.

Green Bay allowed Emanuel Wilson to sign with the Seattle Seahawks in free agency, too, leaving them without a lot of other options.

No one knows what will wind up happening with Jacobs' situation, nor are they banking on Lloyd to stay healthy. For that reason, the Packers would be wise to make a move with another team that has a surplus at the position.

The Packers should pursue a trade for Cardinals running back Trey Benson

The Arizona Cardinals' running back room got crowded in a hurry this offseason. Initially, they signed former Atlanta Falcons draft hit Tyler Allgeier to presumably come in and take over once James Conner's time was up.

All signs pointed to a tandem of Allgeier and Conner with the third-year pro, Trey Benson, still potentially getting some opportunities. Benson is coming off a season that saw him appear in just four games due to injury, and, after not playing much in his rookie campaign, he's a sure trade candidate.

What drove that point home more than anything else, though, was when the Cardinals drafted Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love with the third overall pick this year. At that point, Arizona had an abundance of talent in the room.

Now, the former third-round pick could be on the prowl for a new home.

Coming out of Florida State, Benson was viewed as either the No. 1 or No. 2 prospect in his 2024 class. He was lauded for his size and speed combination.

Benson is a bigger back who also happened to run a sub-4.40 in his 40-yard dash and has the making of a starting running back in the NFL, but his first two seasons have gone about as poorly as they could in terms of luck.

Conner took the job in his rookie campaign while injuries played a major role in 2025.

If Green Bay were able to land a player of Benson's caliber for, say, a fifth-round pick, they should make that happen. Maybe it would cost even less than that. Arizona won't have use for him this year, and then in 2027, he'll be in the last year of his deal.

Should Green Bay land Benson and if he's healthy, he'd be a sure candidate to play a key role within the offense.
