When you think of Romeo Doubs, you think of contested catches, being a go-to target for Jordan Love on third downs, and overall consistency on offense. He's perfectly suited to reliable, trustworthy WR2 duties.
Even Green Bay Packers fans might forget the other role he held in 2025: Returning punts.
Somehow, some way, Doubs led the team with 15 punt returns (no other player had more than six), and following his departure in free agency, the Packers needed to replace him.
Enter Skyy Moore. On the same day the Packers lost Doubs to the New England Patriots, they are signing Moore, a return specialist. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, he is signing a one-year deal with Green Bay.
Packers' Skyy Moore signing proves they may have learned from Mecole Hardman mistake
Moore likely won't play much, if at all, on offense. But the Packers truly needed a replacement for Doubs on special teams, which is bizarre. Why Doubs was ever put in that position remains a mystery, especially as the Packers had signed Mecole Hardman in free agency last spring.
Has general manager Brian Gutekunst learned from that?
The Seattle Seahawks showed the value of having a true, designated returner. The Packers never had one, and it hurt them all year. They kept Hardman throughout the preseason, but he failed to make the 53-man roster.
Moore can change that.
The former Chief and 49er can return punts and kicks. Last season in San Francisco, Moore returned 25 punts for 291 yards with a long of 66 yards. His 11.6-yard average ranked 10th in the NFL. He also returned 33 kicks for 907 yards, an average of 27.5 yards, while taking one back for 98 yards.
Moore can contribute on offense — he has 581 career receiving yards and one touchdown, as well as 58 rushing yards. But that's unlikely to be his pathway to a roster spot.
But that's not where he is needed the most. The Packers genuinely need more help in the return game after losing Doubs, which is something nobody saw coming.
In a bizarre way, Moore can help replace the Packers' departing wide receiver.
