Packers have made it crystal clear how they feel about Savion Williams

With no replacement in hand, flipping Dontayvion Wicks to the Philadelphia Eagles was a bold move from the Green Bay Packers. In exchange for Wicks, they received a 2026 fifth-rounder and a '27 sixth-rounder. That's a decent return considering his contract situation, but it doesn't help the Packers much at present.

Maybe, though, they believe Wicks' replacement is already on the roster. That would be Savion Williams, who is all but guaranteed a bigger role next season with both Wicks and Romeo Doubs gone.

As it stands now, the receiver room is led by Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, and Matthew Golden. Once healthy, tight end Tucker Kraft might be the No. 1 receiving option.

The falloff from Golden to the next man up is a steep one. Free-agent addition Skyy Moore is mainly a kick returner, recording only five catches over the last two seasons. Clearly, the Packers believe Williams can emerge as a sophomore to solidify a thinning depth chart.

Savion Williams has prime opportunity to justify Packers' trust

A third-round pick out of TCU, Williams never found his footing as a rookie. He finished the 2025 season with 10 catches for 78 yards, plus 11 carries for 37 yards. Williams appeared in 12 games before landing on injured reserve with a foot injury, ending his season.

At 6-foot-4 and 222 pounds, he has the physical traits to do more than receive screen passes and toss sweeps. As a rookie, he showcased his big-play ability only once, hauling in a 33-yard reception against the New York Giants in Week 11. If Williams slots in fourth on the receiver depth chart, the Packers will need to see a lot more in Year 2.

Of course, it's not like Wicks was an offensive pillar. Declining in production each season, he ended with 30 catches last year for 332 yards. Golden will pick up some of the slack. Having Watson and Reed healthy will be like adding another receiver in itself. The Packers' top two receivers combined to miss 17 games in 2025.

It's not just Wicks' departure that his former teammates must offset. Losing Doubs in free agency could impact the offense in unexpected ways, removing a reliable target in the middle of the field. Even granting better health for Watson and Reed, the Packers suddenly have more snaps to go around.

Williams is the obvious choice to step in as WR4. That could change if the Packers land an immediate contributor in the draft, but there is no guarantee that they take a receiver before Day 3, given their needs at cornerback and defensive tackle. After Golden as the third option, the receiver hierarchy will likely be determined in training camp.

The floor is yours, Savion. Show the world what you can do.
