In a few weeks, the Green Bay Packers will return for training camp, officially starting their push to the 2025 season.
While the Packers have already addressed most of their needs this offseason, they will still enter camp with a few concerns. Green Bay certainly has enough to contend, but there’s also room to improve the roster.
With options quickly running out, the Packers should sign free-agent corner Asante Samuel Jr., who surprisingly remains available. The former Los Angeles Charger could be a great pickup for a Packers team that still has concerns in its secondary.
Packers could still add Asante Samuel Jr. to the secondary before training camp
Evident by his name, Samuel Jr. is the son of former big-play corner Asante Samuel. Just like his father, Samuel Jr. has been a productive corner in the league since being drafted by the Chargers in the second round of the 2021 Draft. Starting since he was a rookie, Samuel has played 50 games in four seasons, recording six interceptions and 37 pass deflections.
Unfortunately for him, his worst season came last season during his contract year. Samuel didn’t play bad, he just didn’t play much, as a shoulder injury limited him to just four games. Now, he’s a free agent looking for a new home, and will provide some team with a solid veteran starter.
The Packers should hope they’re the team he ultimately decides to join because his presence is needed in the secondary. After moving on from Jaire Alexander this offseason, and not adding much to the secondary, there’s a fear Green Bay could be vulnerable on the backend of the defense. Adding Asante Samuel Jr. to the cornerback unit will help the Packers put that fear to bed.
