The Green Bay Packers are coming off back-to-back playoff appearances and an 11-win season in 2024. With such a talented young core returning, expectations are high for the Packers.
However, they will have to navigate what’s expected to be a tough NFC North. In a division with four teams that could make the postseason, one major flaw could be the difference between being first in the division and last.
Unfortunately for Green Bay, the team does seem to have a flaw that could be a big problem. The cornerback room has emerged as a concerning area for the team. Lacking elite starters and quality depth, all eyes will be on the Packers’ corners once the team returns for training camp.
Cornerback could become a big problem for Packers in training camp
The cornerback room in Green Bay was frequently discussed this offseason because the team made it clear it would be moving on from Jaire Alexander, who signed with the Baltimore Ravens this week.
After months of trying to trade the Pro Bowl corner, the team ultimately just released him. Losing Alexander is already tough, but the team didn’t do much throughout the offseason to prepare for life without him.
The Packers did sign Nate Hobbs to a four-year deal, but the addition of the former Las Vegas Raider didn’t improve the outlook of the secondary much. Fans still have concerns about the team’s corners being able to keep up with all of the dominant passing attacks in the league.
With those concerns already present, it didn’t help to see Bo Melton, a receiver taken in the seventh round of the 2022 Draft, getting reps at corner during Green Bay’s mandatory minicamp. That makes it seem like the Packers are just now realizing how thin they are at corner and are starting to panic. If that’s the case, it would be a horrible look for the front office.
Hopefully, by the time training camp rolls around, Green Bay either adds more people to the room or some of the unestablished corners can put together an impressive camp and provide the team confidence going into the season. If not, it could be a long season for the secondary.
