The Green Bay Packers still need to add another pass-rusher this offseason. One option involves giving a former Super Bowl MVP a call.
Von Miller is one of the greatest to ever do it, his 138.5 career sacks ranking 13th in league history. He boasts eight Pro Bowls, seven All-Pros, and two Super Bowl victories in his Hall of Fame career. A final stop in Green Bay, Wisconsin, sure would make sense.
Garrett Podell of CBS Sports agrees. Podell named the Packers as the ideal landing spot for Miller, and it's hard to argue with his take.
"Miller makes plenty of sense on the Packers, given Micah Parsons' situation. Parsons is recovering from a torn ACL," writes Podell. "Miller would be an ideal addition to hold down the fort at the edge rusher spot opposite former first-round pick Lukas Van Ness until Parsons gets back. Once he does, Miller could be a situational pass rusher for the Packers."
Von Miller should be on the Packers' radar this offseason, but not yet
The Packers absolutely need a pass-rusher, but there's good reason to hit the pause button on signing Miller now. Or any free agent, for that matter.
As things stand, Green Bay will likely receive the maximum four compensatory draft picks in 2027. That's because the team lost Malik Willis, Romeo Doubs, Quay Walker, and Kingsley Enagbare, whose departures could net the Packers compensatory draft capital a year from now.
Signing a free agent now would effectively cost the Packers a draft pick. However, once the draft is over, free-agent moves will no longer count against the compensatory pick formula.
Then there is the potential of adding talent in the draft itself.
Even without a first-round pick, the Packers own eight selections, giving them plenty of opportunities to add an edge defender in a deep class at the position. General manager Brian Gutekunst will have a chance to upgrade the pass rush, should he wish.
The draft may be enough, as the Packers have limited room on the roster alongside Parsons (when he returns), Van Ness, Barryn Sorrell, Brenton Cox Jr., and Collin Oliver.
But if the draft board doesn't fall the Packers' way and they miss out on their top pass-rush targets, or even if they do draft an edge defender but also want to add a veteran, Miller would be a great post-draft option.
The future Hall of Famer is still playing at a high level, having recorded nine sacks and 15 quarterback hits for the Washington Commanders last season. And he achieved that while starting only three games.
While Miller may no longer be the all-world pass-rusher he was a decade ago, he can absolutely contribute as part of the rotation. He knows how to get after quarterbacks, and his experience alongside Parsons and Van Ness would bolster the Packers' pass rush without needing to spend huge money.
For Miller, he'd get an opportunity to add a third ring before the end of his legendary career. Who says no?
