The 10 biggest what-ifs in Green Bay Packers history
- What if Dez Bryant caught it?
- What if Reggie White never signed?
1. What if the 49ers had drafted Aaron Rodgers?
One of the greatest What if? questions in NFL history is -- What if the San Francisco 49ers had taken Aaron Rodgers over Alex Smith?
That question certainly opens up another can of worms when you think about it. Would Alex Smith have fallen to the same spot as Rodgers in the NFL Draft? Would Smith have been considered the ideal type of player to sit behind Brett Favre by the Packers at the time?
Would Alex Smith still be Alex Smith if he had been drafted by the Packers instead of the 49ers? Would Rodgers still be Rodgers, for that matter?
This is one of those questions that is hard to know any answer to, obviously. And we never will. It's kind of like Bears fans who beat themselves up over not drafting Patrick Mahomes in 2017. Would Mahomes have been the same under Matt Nagy as he has been under Andy Reid? Would Aaron Rodgers have excelled with the 49ers?
It's possible he would have been the same guy we all know today, but it's also possible that the chip on his shoulder of being passed on by the 49ers played a critical role in Rodgers' overall success in the NFL. That was a motivating factor for him.
Obviously, if the 49ers had drafted Rodgers, there would be another era of Packers football completely non-existent. The Packers have been known for unparalleled stability at the position over the last three decades and without the 49ers passing on Rodgers at no. 1 overall in the 2005 NFL Draft or Jerry Glanville hating Brett Favre, none of it ever happens.
