A Davante Adams trade back to the Packers isn't as crazy as it sounds

It sounds crazy, but it just might work.

Following a comeback effort that fell just short against an NFC North foe, the Green Bay Packers sit at 2-2 with plenty of time left on the season. But, they do have some serious questions to answer, starting with the kicker position.

Another issue might be at wide receiver, where the Packers saw Christian Watson go down with another injury on Sunday. Since being drafted in the second round two years ago, Watson has struggled to stay healthy and blossom into the No. 1 option Green Bay had envisioned he would be.

Of course, the Packers have a strong group at the position featuring Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, and Dontayvion Wicks. But, a true alpha has yet to emerge from the group. With Watson suffering a high-ankle sprain, one might wonder if something a little crazy might start to make sense for the Packers.

Sunday night on Football Night in America, NBC's Mike Florio noted that a former Packers wide receiver could soon be on the move via trade:

"Keep an ear open for chatter pointing to a possible Davante Adams trade in the next five weeks, unless the Raiders emerge as clear contenders between now and then," Florio said.

This has us thinking: why not reunite Adams with an old friend, running back Josh Jacobs?

Davante Adams returning to the Packers actually makes a ton of sense

First of all, let's look at the Raiders' end. Florio said that if the Raiders aren't a "clear" contender soon, then an Adams trade makes sense, despite what we've heard out of Las Vegas and how they've downplayed a possible deal involving their All Pro receiver.

If ever there were a time to trade Adams, it's now.

As for the Packers? It actually makes a ton of sense. Jordan Love isn't yet 100 percent, and he's going to continue playing through the discomfort as he works his way back. What would help more than getting an established, All-Pro and alpha wide receiver like Adams to pair with a young and dynamic corps.

Looking at the rest of the division, the Detroit Lions are still going to be a threat. That's a talented roster that isn't going away. As for the Vikings? It was all fun and games for the first week, but after they've beaten the likes of the Houston Texans, San Francisco 49ers, and now the Packers ... uh oh?

The Chicago Bears continue to struggle offensively, but their defense is no joke. So, there are tests all across the NFC North and the Packers still have five divisional games to play.

Finally, let's look at the financial aspect of a deal like this.

Florio noted that Adams' salary spikes to over $35 million in 2024. Now, that's a number the Packers could currently absorb with a projected $52 million in cap space, per Over the Cap. However, Adams' contract is also re-workable.

If the Packers really wanted to, they could restructure Adams' contract to save over $17 million in 2025.

In the end, the Packers very well could be a contender with this roster. This is a move that a contender makes, plain and simple.

Is it likely? Probably not. But, would it make sense? You bet it would.
