Former Packers safety scored more Bears TDs than Caleb Williams in Week 1
Chicago Bears fans will talk about a new era beginning in Week 1. They defeated the Tennessee Titans 24-17 after battling back from a 17-point deficit.
That's not the story of this game. Regarding Caleb Williams' performance, it was like earning an A on the group project without doing any of the work. The first-overall pick completed 48.3 percent of his passes for 93 yards, zero touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He earned a passer rating of 55.7.
Williams relied on Chicago's defense and special teams, which forced three turnovers and scored two touchdowns.
And Williams can thank a former Packer.
Former Packers safety Jonathan Owens finds the end zone for Bears before Caleb Williams
The Bears' first touchdown of the season didn't come from the right arm of Williams. Instead, it was former Green Bay Packers safety Jonathan Owens scooping up a blocked punt and returning it for six.
Just as everyone predicted.
The Packers have their own problems following Jordan Love's injury. They need Malik Willis to lead the team to a few victories before Love returns. But Bears fans can't continue to call Williams a better player than Love until he actually proves it.
Chicago won. That's all that counts. Williams will improve as he gains more experience, but it doesn't make his NFL debut any less underwhelming.
The Bears' Week 1 performance shows that they have a talented defense, which is a notable takeaway for the Packers. Fortunately, Green Bay doesn't play Chicago until November, allowing Love plenty of time to return.
Bears fans will take victory laps over the Packers this week, but we've seen this story before.
They may have a one-game lead over Green Bay in the NFC North, but they leave Week 1 with more questions than answers with Caleb Williams.
