Big decisions await the Green Bay Packers before the beginning of the regular season. It's the time of year to trim the roster down to 53 players, which is never an easy process.

A lot must be considered. It's not as simple as picking your best 53 players. The Packers must weigh up which players they are least likely to lose on waivers, meaning they can re-sign them to the practice squad. Roster balance is also important, ensuring they have enough cover in each position.

Roster construction is a year-round process and doesn't end after the Packers finalize their initial 53-man roster. It's called the initial roster for a reason. However, they have to work their way down from 90 players to 53. For some players, that means the end of their NFL careers, while others will quickly find work on new teams.

Below, you can keep track of each roster cut the Packers make before the deadline.

Packers release OL Royce Newman

As Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette reports, the Packers are releasing former fourth-round pick Royce Newman. It was expected after Newman played all four quarters of the preseason game in Denver.

Packers waive QBs Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt

As expected after the Malik Willis trade, the Packers have moved on from Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt, who spent all summer competing for the backup job. Assuming they clear waivers, one of these two will likely return to the practice squad.

Packers waive LB Kristian Welch

This one is a slight surprise, as Kristian Welch was one of the Packers' top preseason performers. He made an interception last week against the Baltimore Ravens. Hopefully, he returns to the practice squad.

Packers waive K Anders Carlson

We'll file this in the "mild" surprise category. It shouldn't be too surprising after the second-year pro's inconsisent summer, but he was probably the Packers' best kicker on the roster. They could bring him back to the practice squad or go in another direction. We'll see.

Packers waive T Caleb Jones and WR Samori Toure

No surprise here. Rasheed Walker, Zach Tom, Andre Dillard, and Kadeem Telfort are the top tackles on the depth chart, and the Packers could also move Jordan Morgan or Elgton Jenkins there. Caleb Jone was a long shot to make the roster. The same goes for Samori Toure, as the Packers are deep at wide receiver and could keep as many as seven on the initial 53.
