Jordan Love may have hinted at which Packers receiver will become the WR1
It's an endless debate. Do the Green Bay Packers need a true WR1?
By that, fans are referring to a superstar like Davante Adams or Jordy Nelson, a receiver who dominates the team's targets and receiving yards. A player who the quarterback trusts and leans on at crucial times.
Last season, the Packers didn't have that. With a young, talented, and deep receiving corps, Green Bay spread the ball around to its ascending playmakers. The team had contributions across the board, with three receivers posting at least 500 receiving yards. Collectively, Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks, and Christian Watson put up 2,470 yards and 25 touchdowns.
Some believed the Packers needed to find a "true WR1" this offseason, while others think that player is already on the roster.
Jordan Love may have hinted at which receiver can step into the featured role this season.
Jordan Love expects a 'monster year' from Packers receiver Dontayvion Wicks
The more opportunities Wicks received in his rookie season, the better he looked. In a fan Q&A for Bleacher Report, Love was asked which player is going to have a breakout season this year.
He picked Wicks.
"I think there's a lot of guys on our team that kind of came onto the scene last year that might've surprised some people," said Love. "I think Dontayvion Wicks is going to have a monster year. I think he was able to do a lot of phenomenal things last year. I think the sky's the limit for him."
"The more reps he gets, he's getting a lot more comfortable out there with the system and playing fast."
He added that Wicks and Jayden Reed will "take the league by storm."
If any of the Packers' young receivers are going to become the "true WR1" who dominates the targets, it's Wicks.
Love isn't the first to publicly praise him. NFL analysts and experts are quickly realizing how well he played last season. Wicks showed superstar potential in year one, from his release, route-running, and ability to get open to his yards-after-catch and big-play ability.
Wicks' speed coach Les Spellman said that the second-year receiver is a player "nobody knows yet" who is "about to take over." Meanwhile, Pro Football Focus called Wicks the Packers' "secret superstar."
Love is building an unstoppable connection with Wicks on the field, as proven by a 20-yard touchdown in the wild-card win over the Dallas Cowboys.
Wicks has the potential to become the "true WR1" in the Packers' offense, and Love is expecting big things from his second-year receiver.
