The Green Bay Packers hoped to get a new deal done with Jordan Love before training camp.

Players will report for camp this week, beginning with the rookies and injured players on Wednesday before the veterans join them on Sunday. The first practice is only a week away. If the Packers still plan to extend Love's contract before then, they need to get a move on.

There's a benefit to getting the deal over the line sooner rather than later. The longer it goes, the bigger of a distraction it becomes. Green Bay doesn't want every question in Love's press conferences to be about his contract situation, especially with only a year remaining on his current deal.

Love has provided a vague update.

Jordan Love doesn't give much of an update on when new Packers deal will come

Love appeared in an AMA (Ask Me Anything) for Bleacher Report, answering questions from Packers fans. Inevitably, Love was asked about a potential new contract, which he unsurprisingly gave a vague answer about.

"That would mean a lot to me. That would be awesome. To be able to sign an extension with the team that drafted you is something that all players dream of," said Love. "Hopefully, that happens here in the future, but I'm excited for the upcoming season and what's in store for our team and to be able to solidify something long-term here in Green Bay."

I mean, he was hardly going to break down the full details of the negotiations, but Love also didn't hint at anything being done imminently.

He said he hopes it happens "here in the future" and then pivoted to his excitement for the upcoming season. There was no comment about hoping to get it done soon or any hint at the possibility of a deal being agreed before training camp.

Again, it's important not to overreact to Love's answer to a question in a fan Q&A. Details about his upcoming extension will be kept quiet until there is something to report.

However, training camp is just days away and a new contract still hasn't been finalized. Most expected it to get done a while ago, but the Packers are now in danger of creating a distraction once the team returns to the practice field.
