The Green Bay Packers played with fire, and now they are getting burned.

Green Bay persisted with Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt throughout training camp before releasing them both at the roster cut deadline, sending a seventh-round pick to the Tennessee Titans for Malik Willis.

Trading for another inexperienced quarterback who had to learn the Packers' system was a massive gamble, and now it has backfired.

Jordan Love's injury has left the Packers with a quarterback mess. Is Willis, who only arrived in Green Bay two weeks ago, ready to start? If not, the only option is Clifford, who the Packers already deemed not good enough for the backup job. Winning a game or two is crucial to keep Green Bay's playoff dreams alive while Love is out.

Now, the Packers may be about to break the emergency glass.

Packers have reportedly reached out to free-agent quarterback Ryan Tannehill

According to The Athletic's Dianna Russini, the Packers have reached out to former Pro Bowler Ryan Tannehill. No deal has been agreed upon, but Green Bay is interested.

It's a move they should've made months ago.

Where does this leave Willis? Signing Tannehill would give the Packers three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, with Willis being demoted to the third option on the depth chart. Would Green Bay have the room to roster three quarterbacks for the rest of the season, or would it risk cutting Willis and hope to get him back on the practice squad?

It's a risk after burning a draft pick to bring him to Green Bay in the first place.

Tannehill isn't a miracle fix to the Packers' backup quarterback problems. He would need to get up to speed with Matt LaFleur's offense, although he has experience in a similar system under Arthur Smith. Tannehill would also need to build chemistry with the Packers' receiving corps.

He is coming off a disappointing season with the Titans, throwing four touchdown passes with seven interceptions before Tennessee benched him for Will Levis.

But of all the available options, he makes the most sense.

Tannehill is highly experienced, with 151 career starts, and he has played at a Pro Bowl level before. If the Packers could build a gameplan around Josh Jacobs, Tannehill is good enough to get the ball into the hands of the playmakers.

Green Bay needs to make it happen.
