AJ Dillon's future with the Green Bay Packers was anything but guaranteed after he signed the most team-friendly deal imaginable in the offseason.

Last week's preseason opener raised further questions. While Dillon made only two yards from his four carries, second-year Emanuel Wilson put in an impressive performance to build on an excellent summer. After signing Josh Jacobs and drafting MarShawn Lloyd, Dillon's future with the team was left in doubt.

Without saying a word, Matt LaFleur ended any doubt during the second preseason game against the Denver Broncos.

AJ Dillon not playing in Packers preseason game effectively confirms roster spot

The Packers have kept 31 players out of tonight's preseason contest, including most of the starters. Jordan Love, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jacobs, and Elgton Jenkins are among the notable offensive starters who are not playing.

Dillon is also inactive.

It effectively guarantees his spot on the 53-man roster. If LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst had even considered the possibility of him not making the roster, Dillon would have been playing tonight. His absence shows they don't need to see any more from their veteran running back.

Emanuel Wilson has another opportunity to prove himself. He made an impressive start to the preseason last week and will lead the backfield again tonight. MarShawn Lloyd's injury has created an opening for a roster spot, especially if the rookie is unavailable for Week 1. Even if he's healthy, the Packers may prefer the additional depth of keeping a fourth running back.

We can add Dillon's name to the list of roster locks. Unless he is carrying an injury we don't know about, the Packers' decision to sit him proves he is making the 53-man roster.

The question now is whether Wilson can do enough to join him. Will the Packers consider keeping four running backs?
