One Packers player on the roster bubble at each position
- Packers face uncertainty at backup quarterback
- Several draft picks not guaranteed to make roster
- Could a free-agent addition miss out?
It's that time of year again. Green Bay Packers training camp kicks off later this month, igniting several fascinating positional battles.
The task ahead for head coach Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst isn't just to prepare for the regular season, but to decide which players they intend to keep on their initial 53-man roster at the end of August.
Some players are roster locks, their place in no doubt. Others are long shots to make the 53. Then there is a group of players on the roster bubble. They face competition for a spot and could miss out.
That list includes these players at each position.
Quarterback: Sean Clifford
The Packers drafting Sean Clifford in the fifth round doesn't guarantee him anything. The Penn State passer is anything but a roster lock this summer.
Green Bay needs confidence that Clifford is a capable backup ready to step into the starting lineup should Jordan Love miss time.
Clifford faces competition from Danny Etling. Neither player has thrown a regular-season pass, but Etling has experience on his side, having played for seven different teams since 2018.
Then there is the possibility that Green Bay adds a veteran during training camp. There are plenty of experienced quarterbacks still available in free agency. If Clifford struggles at camp, it might not take long for the Packers to sign another passer.
