Packers: 10 worst draft picks of Brian Gutekunst era
- A former second-round pick
- Jordan Love one of Gutekunst's worst?
- Drafting a long snapper
Nobody's NFL Draft record is perfect, by any means. With that being said, there aren't all that many holes to poke in what Packers GM Brian Gutekunst has done since 2018. Yes, the Green Bay Packers (and Gutekunst, specifically) have been the subject of a ton of public scrutiny with the way the team has drafted in recent years, but you aren't going to find many real "misses" among his selections.
Therefore, putting together a list of his 10 worst draft picks so far was abnormally difficult due to the fact that only two of these classes have actually finished out their rookie contracts. With all of that in mind, let's get nit-picky about Brian Gutekunst's first six draft classes with the Green Bay Packers, prefaced with the idea that he's really been excellent overall.
Top 10 worst draft picks from Green Bay Packers GM Brian Gutekunst (so far)
10. Jordan Love, QB, Utah State (1st round, 2020)
Alright, it's a little unfair to say this at this point and maybe even a little bit of a hot take. But there's no doubt that the Jordan Love pick is the reason why things fell apart over the last handful of years for the Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers, and at this point, nobody really knows if it's going to be worth it.
Over the course of his first three NFL seasons, Jordan Love has barely played at all. The Packers traded up to get him but they obviously haven't had any real need for him to play with Aaron Rodgers winning the NFL MVP award in both 2020 and 2021.
Love has huge shoes to fill, to say the least. He can easily be removed from this list with a big season in 2023, but that's all very much in the to be determined category. Was trading up to select Jordan Love worth the headache it's caused the last three years? We'll find out.
9. Sean Clifford, QB, Penn State (5th round, 2023)
You know it's a good sign for your NFL Draft history when a fifth-round pick who hasn't even taken part in a preseason game cracks the list of your 10 worst draft picks as a GM. Sean Clifford was a weird pick for the Green Bay Packers this year, not because they didn't need a backup quarterback but simply because they could have done a lot better than this.
There were a lot of quarterbacks selected in the 2023 NFL Draft, and the Packers had a lot of picks. As a matter of fact, they had 13 picks in total in this year's draft, and Clifford wasn't expected -- by anyone -- to get drafted. The Packers could have gone after a player with better upside in the event that they actually need someone to replace Jordan Love for any reason.
