Packers 'biggest bust' for 2024 is already painfully obvious

But also weirdly optimistic?

If you thought that NFL training camps finally starting meant that summer listicles would disappear, I have wonderful news for you: it's only mid-July!

There's still at least six weeks left to throw a bunch of names together and figure out how they relate later. Player rankings are only just getting started, so don't worry – time is on our side.

Bleacher Report knows there's no stopping this train, which presumably is why their latest one – Predicting Every NFL Team's Biggest Bust of the 2024 NFL Season – dropped this week. The bad news is that it takes a lot of scrolling to get to their blurb about the Packers' biggest bust of the season. The good news is that they picked a kicker.

Packers 'biggest bust' for 2024 is already painfully obvious

BR's pick: Anders Carlson, K

Here's what they wrote about Carlson:

"Kickers are fickle. After a single misfire in seven games to start 2023, Anders Carlson missed a kick in 10 of Green Bay's next 12 outings. Lost confidence is a real challenge for specialists, and a similar kind of struggle could lead to Carlson not making it through 2024 on the roster."

I'll take it! BR's cowardice (maybe a little harsh, sorry BR) is the Packers' gain, though.

Think about it: if Green Bay's biggest bust really does end up being a sixth-round kicker, their season probably went okay. At least it wasn't Josh Jacobs. Besides, the free agent kicking market exists for this exact reason. Some kinda-good kicker will absolutely be available, and that ultimately won't be any worse of a situation than what Carlson hypothetically did to get them there in the first place.

Let's also consider that the writing might be on the wall for Carlson, B/R bashing or not.

Matt LaFleur didn't hide his displeasure with Carlson after the NFC Divisional Round loss to San Francisco, even if he walked back that viral quote. Signing Greg Joseph in free agency is as clear a sign that the pressure is on Carlson to prove himself in training camp, as the Packers aren't going to carry two kickers into the season.

If they do, that's even less of an endorsement of Carlson and would simply seem to delay the inveitab

The Giants' and Titans' biggest bust candidate is their franchise quarterback. The Raiders' is the QB they gave over $20 million. Old friend Allen Lazard even made the list. So, all things considered, this went pretty well. The Packers survived another round of online listicles. Don't look now, but they're stacking good days.
