When the Green Bay Packers gave Aaron Rodgers permission to talk to the New York Jets, the assumption was both sides effectively had a deal in place.

All they needed was the green light from Rodgers, and the wheels would be in motion.

Rodgers made his intention crystal clear on the Pat McAfee Show last month, saying he wants to play for the Jets, yet we are seemingly no closer to a trade.

How has it come this far with no agreement? Surely the two sides had a deal ready before Rodgers spoke to the Jets?

Well, it would appear they did.

Aaron Rodgers rumors: NFL insider reports parameters were in place before Jets visit

Speaking on the Wilde and Tausch Show on ESPN Milwaukee, Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports provided some insight.

According to Robinson, the Packers and Jets had trade parameters in place, but Jets owner Woody Johnson was concerned by Aaron Rodgers' comments on the Pat McAfee Show. Rodgers said he was "90% retired" during his darkness retreat this offseason.

"They had trade parameters worked out, and then when Aaron went on 'Pat McAfee' and said 'I'm 90% retired when I went into the darkness retreat', I think it scared Woody," Robinson said.

Robinson believes the deal would've seen the Packers receive a 2023 third-round pick and a 2024 first. But after Rodgers' comments on McAfee's show, the Jets were concerned they may only get one year from the MVP quarterback.

"I think at that time the thought process was again, the Jets were looking at it as a two-year window," said Robinson.

Are Jets playing dirty in Aaron Rodgers trade negotiations?

If the Packers and Jets had parameters in place, only for the Jets to back off once they had been granted permission to speak with Rodgers, it's understandable why the Packers might be frustrated.

Packers GM Brian Gutekunst would have every right to stick by the parameters they had agreed upon and settle for nothing less.

Rodgers considering retirement is hardly breaking news. He has openly discussed his NFL future in recent years, admitting he would need time to think about retirement.

Before negotiations had started, the Jets must've known Rodgers may only play one more season.

So, we wait. Will Aaron Rodgers get traded before the 2023 NFL Draft? Good question. But if the Packers are dragging their feet, who could blame them?
