When the Green Bay Packers need to upgrade a position in the offseason, they attack it over and over, using a combination of the draft and free agency.

We already know Xavier McKinney is a star, but he isn't the only new addition to the Packers' secondary making an impact. In the fourth round, the Packers selected Evan Williams. Many criticized the pick as other safeties were on the board, but he has silenced his doubters at every opportunity.

Williams turned heads at training camp with interception after interception, but he had to wait for an opportunity to play significant snaps in the regular season. With fellow rookie Javon Bullard spending time in the slot, Williams' chance came in Sunday's victory over the Los Angeles Rams. And he made the most of it.

No player in the game had more tackles than Williams' 10, and he also had a team-best two pass defenses. The rookie pick came up with the game-sealing play, breaking up a pass intended for Colby Parkinson on fourth down. Matthew Stafford targeted Williams in the middle of the field, but the Packers' fourth-round pick perfectly timed it to force an incompletion.

Evan Williams earns high praise after impressing in Packers' Week 5 win

Williams stepped up in the biggest moment of the game and sealed the win for his team. Plays like that will earn the rookie more snaps, and he has impressed head coach Matt LaFleur.

"Evan is another guy that's very smart. He's instinctive, and he has a knack for the football," said LaFleur. "He made a couple critical plays today on some critical downs, be it third or fourth down, where he was able to defend some passes. I think Evan is going to continue to get better and better and better."

It's not just LaFleur who is impressed by the rookie. Fellow safety McKinney, who is playing at an All-Pro level with five interceptions in five games, said postgame that Williams and Bullard are "going to be special in this league."

Green Bay attacked the safety position in the offseason and is reaping the rewards. General manager Brian Gutekunst moved on from Darnell Savage, Jonathan Owens, and Rudy Ford. He even surprisingly waived Anthony Johnson Jr. at the end of the preseason. The Packers signed McKinney in free agency before using draft picks on Bullard and Williams, and it is paying off.

Williams had one interception entering Week 5, but with an expanded role, he delivered with a big-time performance. The rookie deserves more playing time moving forward.
