Packers gave the worst birthday present to Jonathan Garvin
It has been quite the day for Jonathan Garvin.
Garvin turned 24 today, and the Green Bay Packers wished him a happy birthday on their social media accounts this morning, as they do with every player.
Just hours later, The Athletic's Matt Schneidman reported that the Packers had released Garvin.
Not great timing.
It's unfortunate, as the social media team would've had no idea that Garvin was going to be released only a few hours after their post.
To make it worse, they awkwardly deleted the birthday message.
Unfortunately, the Packers moving on from Garvin felt inevitable. He struggled to make an impact as a backup edge rusher last season, registering zero sacks.
Green Bay has improved its depth at the position. First-round pick Lukas Van Ness will likely begin the season as the No. 3 pass rusher. Then there is Justin Hollins, an in-season signing last year who landed a new deal after making an immediate impact.
Position switch doesn't work out as Packers release Jonathan Garvin
Garvin switched positions at the start of training camp, working with the defensive linemen instead of the pass rushers.
While a positional switch made some sense as he would have a better chance of making the roster there, it wasn't a great sign. It showed his opportunity to make the roster at edge rusher was likely over.
The timing is terrible. The fact his time in Green Bay ends on his birthday is brutal, but teams will always make tough decisions they feel helps their roster.
The positive for Garvin is that it's still early into training camp, so moving on now could benefit him. He has extra time to make another roster, learn the playbook, and play in the preseason games. It may have been more difficult had the Packers waived him in late August.
It didn't work out for Garvin this year, but it hopefully won't be long before he finds a new team.
