Updated Green Bay Packers depth chart after the 2024 NFL Draft
The Green Bay Packers wanted to create competition across the roster during the 2024 NFL Draft, and they achieved that with their 11 selections.
Green Bay went heavy at positions requiring the most work. Having entered the draft with little depth at linebacker, safety, and along the offensive line, the Packers doubled and even tripled down at those positions. Eight of their 11 draft picks addressed these positions of need.
It's impossible to predict how many of the Packers' new additions will become key contributors, but their approach of adding multiple players at positions of need is smart. It's a numbers game. If you need a safety but only draft one, you're taking a huge risk. Add three, and the chances of hitting on one of them increase.
Not every player needs to become a starter. The Packers also needed more depth, and they went a long way to achieving that in the NFL Draft.
Packers depth chart highlights added competition and depth after NFL Draft
Packers depth chart: Offense
Position | Starter | 2nd | 3rd |
---|---|---|---|
QB | Jordan Love | Sean Clifford | Michael Pratt |
RB | Josh Jacobs | MarShawn Lloyd | AJ Dillon |
WR | Christian Watson | Dontayvion Wicks | Grant DuBose |
WR | Romeo Doubs | Bo Melton | Samori Toure |
WR | Jayden Reed | Malik Heath | |
TE | Luke Musgrave | Tucker Kraft | Ben Sims |
LT | Rasheed Walker | Jordan Morgan | Andre Dillard |
LG | Elgton Jenkins | Royce Newman | |
C | Josh Myers | Jacob Monk | |
RG | Sean Rhyan | Donovan Jennings | |
RT | Zach Tom | Luke Tenuta | Caleb Jones |
Notably, the wide receiver and tight end rooms remain unchanged. Well, that's assuming we're not including Alex McGough, who is making a surprising position switch from quarterback to wide receiver. The Packers already have depth at those positions, and it's important to allow their young receivers and tight ends to get on the field.
The running back depth chart has changed dramatically from last season. Green Bay replaced Aaron Jones with Josh Jacobs and third-round pick MarShawn Lloyd. The rookie has a good chance of securing the No. 2 job ahead of AJ Dillon, as long as he shows enough in pass protection over the summer.
Green Bay's offensive line depth has also improved. Time will tell whether first-round pick Jordan Morgan starts right away, and if he does, will he stick at tackle or move inside?
The Packers added versatility and depth. Jacob Monk's best position is center, although he has experience across the line, while Travis Glover has the potential to eventually become the swing tackle.
Packers depth chart: Defense
Position | Starter | 2nd | 3rd |
---|---|---|---|
DE | Rashan Gary | Lukas Van Ness | Brenton Cox Jr. |
DT | Kenny Clark | Karl Brooks | |
DT | Devonte Wyatt | T.J. Slaton | Colby Wooden |
DE | Preston Smith | Kingsley Enagbare | |
WLB | Quay Walker | Isaiah McDuffie | Ty'Ron Hopper |
MLB | Edgerrin Cooper | Eric Wilson | Kristian Welch |
CB | Jaire Alexander | Carrington Valentine | Kalen King |
CB | Eric Stokes | Corey Ballentine | Robert Rochell |
NB | Keisean Nixon | Javon Bullard | |
SS | Javon Bullard | Evan Williams | Kitan Oladapo |
FS | Xavier McKinney | Anthony Johnson Jr. | Zayne Anderson |
Green Bay's defensive line and cornerback rooms remain mostly unchanged, with the exception of the addition of seventh-round pick Kalen King. The Packers invested heavily along the defensive front last year, and the group should benefit from a switch to a 4-3 system.
Most of the work came at linebacker and safety.
De'Vondre Campbell is gone, and Green Bay upgraded its depth on Days 2 and 3. Second-round pick Edgerrin Cooper has star potential, while Ty'Ron Hopper provides depth and competition alongside Isaiah McDuffie.
The Packers completely overhauled the safety position this offseason. Anthony Johnson Jr. is the only safety who started a game last year to return. Following the big-time addition of Xavier McKinney in free agency, Green Bay drafted Javon Bullard, Evan Williams, and Kitan Oladapo. This group features athleticism and versatility, allowing Jeff Hafley to move his defensive backs around.
Packers depth chart: Specialists
Position | Starter | 2nd | 3rd |
---|---|---|---|
K | Anders Carlson | Greg Joseph | Jack Podlesny |
P | Daniel Whelan | ||
LS | Matt Orzech | Peter Bowden | |
KR | Keisean Nixon | Jayden Reed | |
PR | Jayden Reed | Keisean Nixon |
There will be plenty of competition on special teams. The Packers have brought in two kickers, including veteran Greg Joseph, to compete with Anders Carlson.
Carlson remains the starter until proven otherwise, but Green Bay giving his number to a seventh-round pick doesn't exactly inspire confidence.
Undrafted rookie Peter Bowden will compete for the long snapper job.
