For the better part of a year now, Romeo Doubs has been viewed as a potential trade candidate for the Green Bay Packers.
Despite solid production over his first two seasons after the Packers picked him up in the fourth round of the 2022 draft, Doubs rubbed a lot of people the wrong way when he skipped a couple of practices last October, which ultimately resulted in a one-game suspension. Despite the incident, Green Bay opted to keep him, only to watch him suffer a pair of concussions down the stretch of the 2024 campaign, thus bringing his reliability into question.
Doubs' future with the franchise looked even more bleak when the Packers used two of their first three picks in April's draft on wide receivers, taking Matthew Golden in Round 1 and Savion Williams in Round 3. And when Christian Watson, who still hasn't taken a snap this season as he continues to recover from a torn ACL, received a one-year extension a few weeks back that will keep him in Green Bay through the 2026 season, Doubs' fate seemed to be sealed.
But things have taken an interesting turn in the early weeks of this 2025 campaign, as Doubs has surprisingly emerged as the Packers' top wide receiver through the first four games. It needs to be noted, of course, that part of the reason for that may be due to Jayden Reed's broken collarbone. Nevertheless, Romeo is doing exactly what one is supposed to do in a contract year and has put the Packers in an awkward position.
Romeo Doubs has backed the Packers into a corner with his explosive play
Doubs is never a guy who's going to put up genuine WR1 numbers. But that could honestly be said of anyone in the Green Bay receiving room, as the Packers have gone with an "everybody eats" type of offensive approach since the moment Davante Adams was traded following the 2021 season, which is why the franchise hasn't had a 1,000-yard receiver since.
Golden may end up being the one to break that streak at some point, but it's taking some time for the first-round rookie to get himself acclimated to the pro game. In the meantime, however, Doubs is stepping up and showing his worth.
Again, his numbers aren't flashy, as he's caught 13 passes for 179 yards. But when Love needed a go-to guy in the Packers' dogfight with the Dallas Cowboys this past Sunday night, Romeo showed up and showed out, catching six passes for 58 yards with three touchdowns in the 40-40 tie, thus giving him four scores on the season, as he also caught a touchdown pass in Week 2 against the Washington Commanders.

This has become quite a tricky situation. If Doubs continues to produce like he has, he'll likely want to test the market this spring. So, even if the Packers were to offer him an extension before free agency begins or even during this season, he could very well reject it if the number isn't big enough. As such, Green Bay may still look to trade him just to ensure they get something for him instead of letting him walk out the door and getting nothing in return.
If the Packers can get Doubs to agree to stay beyond this year before the trade deadline, perhaps Dontayvion Wicks goes on the trading block instead. Or maybe nobody goes at all. But the receiving room is going to be awfully crowded when Watson and Reed return, so it'll be very interesting to see how all this plays out.
But whatever the outcome, Doubs has undoubtedly given Green Bay a lot to think about in the weeks and months to come.
