Much has been made about the Green Bay Packers' wide receiver room over the last year or so. There are a few different types of playmakers on the depth chart.
But, maybe the most consistent of them all has been Romeo Doubs, who is set to enter free agency for the first time this spring. On a recent episode of Deebo & Joe, Doubs spoke about his impending decision.
Doubs wasn't asked about which teams, necessarily, could potentially be on the table for him in free agency. But, he was asked a very specific, pointed question:
"Of all the teams that are potentially there, do you think Green Bay will have the best opportunity to get to the Super Bowl?"
Doubs' answer was short and to the point, and Packers fans have got to love it:
"Yes sir."
Romeo Doubs sounds like he will return to the Green Bay Packers if the price is right
We have known, for a while, that Doubs is likely to test free agency rather than simply accepting a deal to come back to Green Bay.
If you trust an outlet like Spotrac to make a fair assessment, Doubs is worth an annual average of $12 million, which is an interesting number considering Christian Watson's one-year extension was for $13.25 million.
Watson is, of course, the more explosive playmaker. But, his injury history has kept him from fully blossoming for a longer period of time. If Watson was consistently healthy, he'd likely reach over the $20 million mark, annually.
Doubs at $12 million per year feels like a bargain, considering he and Watson both came into the league at the same time and Doubs has totaled 160 more receiving yards in that time frame. But, this Packers team still doesn't have that alpha in the room. Fans would love to believe that Watson still has it in him, but the worries in regards to his health are too great, at this stage.
Matthew Golden was drafted with No. 1 receiver capital, but his rookie season didn't show us much at all in terms of living up to it. Looking at things through rose-colored glasses, we'd like to believe he's simply due for a later breakout than some.
But, how long do we wait? And what do the Packers decide to offer Doubs in the meantime?
The truth is, Doubs has shown more potential of being the Packers' No. 1 wide receiver, so should he get paid like it?
It's a hard situation to navigate for Brian Gutekunst, who has to know that this team still doesn't have that top-dog type of wideout. At the very least, Gutekunst knows Doubs believes, in his heart, that the Packers give him the best chance to win a ring.
