The writing was on the wall for Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs well before the 2025 NFL campaign began. His long-term outlook with the club has been in question since they double-dipped at his position in the NFL Draft this past April.
Well, the time has finally come. The Packers enter the offseason after a crushing Wild Card loss to the Chicago Bears with Doubs among several notable free agents. Doubs dominated on a national stage on Saturday, all but ending any glimmer of hope the team had of retaining him. It feels like this is where the two sides go their separate ways after a productive four-year partnership, especially following his latest valuation.
Spotrac's calculated market value anticipates Doubs netting roughly $48 million over four years in his next contract. The Packers were already hard-pressed to retain him (and other key players set to hit the open market), but he's effectively gone at this price.

Green Bay is currently over the 2026 salary cap, and that's without Doubs' projected $12 million average annual value on the books. That alone should tell you where this situation is heading: a breakup.
Keeping Doubs isn't in the budget for the Packers, barring a significant pay cut. It's increasingly difficult to justify extending him when they already have limited resources to work with and recently replenished their wideout group. First-round pick Matthew Golden finished his disappointing rookie year on a high note, and draft classmate Savion Williams figures to see more opportunities.
In addition to Golden and Williams, the Packers also have veteran wideouts Jayden Reed and Christian Watson signed through next season. Oh, and star tight end Tucker Kraft will be returning from a torn ACL. There's no shortage of mouths to feed in Green Bay, which makes Doubs more of a luxury than a necessity.
Before torching the Bears, Green Bay had been scaling back Doubs' usage, ostensibly foreshadowing his inevitable fate. Watson usurped him as the Packers' No. 1 pass-catcher almost immediately upon a midseason return from a torn ACL. Do with that information what you will.
With that in mind, Doubs' excellent playoff performance against the Bears is shaping up to be his Packers send-off. He stepped up when the team needed him most, to the tune of eight receptions, 124 yards, and a touchdown. Nevertheless, it's too little, too late, considering Golden also fared well in Chicago.
