The Packers-Alvin Kamara speculation is over for good (and it's for the best)

The Green Bay Packers undoubtedly have questions in the running back room. They are relying heavily on MarShawn Lloyd staying healthy and Chris Brooks taking on an elevated role following Emanuel Wilson's departure.

It has led to speculation about a move for All-Pro running back Alvin Kamara, who could step in as the RB2 and give the Packers more experience and depth behind Josh Jacobs. It never felt likely, and we can now rule it out completely.

The New Orleans Saints have reworked Kamara's deal, a clear sign they have no interest in trading him, and also that Kamara wants to remain in New Orleans. That aligns with just about everything he has said when connected to trade buzz in recent years.

It ends any talk of the Packers trading for him, and it's a good thing.

Trading for Alvin Kamara never made much sense for the Packers

Giving up any draft capital for the soon-to-be 31-year-old Kamara would've made little sense.

Sure, he's a five-time Pro Bowler and was among the most unstoppable running backs in the league during the peak of his career (the Packers know that better than anybody), but his performances are well and truly in decline.

It has been half a decade since Kamara's last Pro Bowl nod. Last season, he posted career lows in rushing yards (471), yards per carry (3.6), rushing touchdowns (one), receptions (33), receiving yards (186), and receiving touchdowns (zero).

Six years ago, Kamara put up 1,688 all-purpose yards and 21 total touchdowns. In 2025, he managed just 657 yards while finding the end zone only once.

Injuries have also become a factor, with Kamara missing 10 games over the past two seasons.

The veteran will take on the RB2 duties behind Travis Etienne Jr. in New Orleans. In Green Bay, the hope is that Lloyd can stay healthy and become the home-run hitter the Packers need in the backfield. Lloyd doesn't offer the same receiving talent as Kamara at his best, but the third-year pro is the best pass-catcher in the Packers' running back room.

Early signs are encouraging about Lloyd's recovery from recurring soft-tissue issues, and he could be the breakout star the Packers need this season.

Kamara to Green Bay never made much sense. He's enjoyed a legendary career and can still offer something as an RB2, but the Packers were right to never give up draft capital. And it sounds like Kamara had no intention of leaving New Orleans, anyway.

We can close the book on the Kamara speculation, and it's for the best.
